Hi Scoobyzoom,

I have just bought a 523i, full bmw service history etc. Popped into Dick Lovett (where it was bought, and serviced) and asked for a look at what it may have had done to it. Immaculate female behind the desk said.
"Sorry, but I cannot divulge that, it is a breach of data protection"

I replied that as far as I was aware that the service history related to the car (which is now owned by me) and not the previous keeper.

She got a little shirty and said "NO"

However, this is only after I gave her the service book and she said " How can I help you Mr xxxxxx" Thus giving me the previous keepers name - Surely THAT was a breach of data protection.

I am a little confused, was she talking out of her posterior or was I right to go away muttering like a madman?

Your views appreciated!

I've experienced this too, wanted to check a car out before I bought it, answered the owner question honestly and got the Data Protection act nonsense. Called back the next day and answered dishonestly and found out what I needed to know. I think BMW are wary because of the Nicasil problems.

Data protection act is bollox in these examples as it only applies to the storage and use of a persons details and not to the records relating to the vehicle.

I suggest you get a copy of the act plonk it on her desk and ask her to quote you the paragraph which she thinks stops this information being given (have done this before and the look on the blokes face was priceless)

I've always find the best way is to avoid dealing with 'the skirt' in any way, I know some of you will find it difficult to ignore a bit of eye candy, Patrick, but just walk past her and have a word with the service manager who is usually a little more 'human' about these things
