M5 CSL

January debut for lightweight large one

Amidst all the talk of 500bhp V10s in the next M5, news emerges that a 'lightweight' version with 550bhp could be debuted at the Detroit motor show in January.

Whether stripping out the cup holders and fitting a carbon fibre bonnet will really be necessary for road going use remains to be seen. It will either form the basis of a race car or simply be another car to aspire to for those seeking to stand out of the crowd.

I'm sure it will be and hopefully it will send E39 M5 prices into freefall then I can get one next year.

I hope it's really ugly, so that the residuals on my E39 will firm, allowing me to trade-it against one. Then once in ownership, the looks will grow on me.

Will it come as a touring ?

Why lighten a car of that size anyway?

The 3 series is smaller and nimbler and I'm sure someone could fit a v10 in if it will take a straight six. I had a v8 E36 and the E46 is no narrower in the engine bay from what I can tell.

Now, a stripped out M3CSL with a v10 engine would be just the ticket

7 speed tiptronic paddle shift as standard as the engine nukes a manual box. they had it up to 600 bhp on a test bed but was a tad unreliable....

e39 m5's are raving good news at the minute and are very difficult to get as DeR will tell you. its took me a month to find him something half suitable.

and they arent that ugly in the flesh i can assure you, with a big set of 19"ers under the arches and tell tale shotguns poking out under the bumper they should be lairy enough to quiten you doubting thomas's

meant to say Hartge do fit the M5 engine in an E46 M3. about £90,000 to you sir but apparantly goes like a scalded whippet

wot...like a yeast infection you mean? Seriously, I think the "bangalised" 5 series looks dog ugly in photos but much better in the metal and I'm sure once it's been through the hands of the M Sport Dep't it'll be a killer machine.

Errrr, the BMW SMG system (tiptronic paddle shift as you call it) is exactly the same gearbox as a "regular" manual.

Probably is MrOTR but i'm only telling you what i've been told mate. Surely the electronic jiggery buggery in the SMG II and III must help it keep from exploding then? As i am about as technical as a ham sandwich i dont know.

Took out an E60 demonstrator last week. There are bits I like and bits I do not like. However the most worrying feature is the active steering changing it's mind halfway through corners.

An E60 M5 test drive would be important to tempt me out of my E39.

ScoobyZoom,

The only difference between the systems is the way in which the clutch is actuated. In a manual, you obviously use the pedal with your foot. In the SMG, the system does it for you hydraulically. So when the clutch is engaged, the systems are effectively the same, so if one blows up they both will.

like i said then MrOTR, the electronic jiggery bu99ery has something to do with operating the clutch for you and is going to be far more adept at shifting than us leadfooted types. Perhaps they meant the clutch then i dont know im not technical and i dont claim to be. Just reporting what im told from BMW themselves mate.

As for the culinary fastening devices rest assured that beverages will be firmly secured, camping gaz burner i am not so sure..

Oop front rest a monitor of unasscertained dimensions, be it a standard creature of a screen of wider girth i have yet to fathom, upon visual inspection my findings will by reported with haste.
