Anyone know what i can do/buy to increase the performance in my 1998 3 series compact? It's 1.9ti engine with 140 Bhp. I want to get more out of her though.
Is it possible without killing the car?

Any money you spend will not be recouped when you sell the car, and there's no obvious way to get loads more power. Sell it, and buy a faster one?

I've always been of the thinking that unless you've got the quickest 'factory' model of the car you want then there is no point spending much money on 'go faster' bits, other than exhaust and air filter everything else is going to cost big money, give only minimal performance increase, and annoy your insurer
So sell the 320i and buy an M3 or at least a 325i/328i, and trade up from the compact to a proper 3 series and again buy an M3, you can pick up an early E36 M3 for under £10k, which is probably a lot less than that Racing Dynamics V8 engine swap

Drive to BMW garage in 3 series and swap for 5 series

Well the M3 engine fits
Or the 850i v8

The engine in the 850 was actually a 5.4-litre V12; in the CSi it kicked out a lovely creamy 380bhp! Have another look at the picture - you can see 12 pipes, 6 on each side.

With that engine you will only get a modest increase in performance for quite a large exspense of money. A chip, ram air filter, and exhaust will likely gain about 15-20 bhp max, but will cost about £1000. Alternativly you can fit a 2.3 (Actually 2.5) or the 2.8 out of a 323/328 as the european cars had a 323ti model and the 328 is the same size, but then you are looking at loads of money. you will then gain 171 or 193BHP respectivley. Alternativly you can go to Linden Special Vehicles and get the car super/turbo charges which will get you about 200BHP, but again very exspensive. Best bet if you want more power is to buy a faster car as it will cost less and have more resale value. For example a good 328 sport can be picked up with low milage for under 10k, which will be pretty close to what your compact is worth. Other options include any M car which are great, but significantly more exspensive to run which has to be a consideration.

Try Domster

He had and M3 with a 8 series v8 installed. Looked like a pimp mobile and drank fuel. Had to have extra bracing below the engine so had 2 inch ground clearance

Thanks...that's what I thought. I'm looking for a 1999/2000 323i or 325i saloon (would prefer a coupe but they're too expensive ). I would love an M3 but already own a Chim so couldn't possibly afford both...and my Trev's staying put oh

Any tips/advice on buying a 323i/325i most welcome...

When buying a car that is that new it must have a full BMW service history and look out for an extended BMW warrenty. You can extend these indefinantly for a fee untill the car has 100,000 miles, and basically anything that goes wrong they will fix as you would have with a new car. My father bought a 2 year 11 month old 528ise and extended the warrenty. At the next service they found a problem with the wiring loom and replaced it free of charge. The warrenty cost £350, a new loom would have been £6000. Enough said!

Have you had a think about NOS . I AM anyway its a system where you have nitrous oxide in a bottle and with a progressive controller it slowly injects it into your engine boosting power by 50 bhp to 100 bhp Safely . You can have more but your need to uprate parts of your engine and car if you wana stay safe. you can slowly potter around getting good m.p.g. then turn it on and unleash 240bhp . oh that sounds good it costs roughly £1200 but thats for pukka kit . its that or get a kit car you know who im talking to . We were just very lucky. Aparantly was a fire hazard, not that we knew there was anything wrong.
