Irritating dashboard

Help!
I have an E39 535i. The dashboard display - the computer bit at the bottom - is not displaying correctly. The information is coming up but it is like not all of the pixels of the display, so what you end up with is illegible, and I end up turning it all off.
I have taken it into my local main dealer who say the whole dashboard pod holding the tacho, speedo, etc needs to be replaced... ... at a cost of almost £600!!! Needless to say I am not bothered enough to blow £600 so that I can the outside temperature! That said I would like to get it sorted if anyone has any ideas on what I might be able to do.
I am also looking for a reliable specialist in essex to look after the rest of the car for me.

You want to speak to Phil from Hartlake, BMW specialsist and awsome with electronics. I would of thought he will now the fix from your description alone. His company is based in Kent off the A2 which is not far from essex. I drive to him from surrey for him to look after my BMW and he is doing some work on my car tomorow.
