My M3 does that! BMW tell me it is a common fault and is simple to fix.

I think you remove the door card, and tweak the rails the window runs in - something to do with it getting tight, thinking someone's arm is in the way, and winding down.

It uses a current sensor on the motor, so as soon as it gets restricted, it reverses.

Not got round to getting mine fixed yet.

This is indeed a common problem, my drivers window (e36) occasionally does this.

BMW dealers even have a name for this - Bouncing.

They say the only resolution is a new window motor. I havent bothered cos they wanted £200 and I am too poor.

AFAIK, it can be a gremlin in the obtrusion sensor (which is meant to trigger the safety feature whereby if the window is closing and something is jamming it then the window drops back down)

or

It could be worn teeth in the system

or

It could be a knackered motor.

Similar problems seem to be rife across the E36 range - so as long as you can still fully close the window, most folk just seem to struggle on with the glitch.

My M3 does it too.

I improved the situation by cleaning up the seals, but I guess it's something slightly more serious.

I am visiting my BMW man tomorrow for him to look at this along with a few other niggles - he says that taking off teh door card and cleaning/lubing the runners and seals usually does the trick.

Will let you know how I get on!
