Can anyone help make my mind up as i am thinking of buying 1999 M5.Got 3 kids & need something quick.
Thought about tvr cerbie but after speaking to some owners on pistonheads (they seem very helpful & great bunch of lads) the running costs about £3k ayear without juice is far to high, with engine rebuilds about 30k miles costing another £5k i wouldnt be able to afford to eat!
So think i might be a bit sensible & get 1 of these, but are they any good?

Short answer, Yes, but I've never driven one. M5 came 9th in Clarksons top 100 cars of the century. Not got the buttock clenching, balls out ferocity of a Cerbera, however, it will start, not blow up....very often and dealer support is great. Much better choice if you have a family but want tar mac tearing performance. To own a TVR you need another car to get you around when its in the workshop or back at the factory.

Try an HSV as well. I had the same dilemma and drove both. The M5 was a truly brilliant car but still went for the HSV.

A legend in it's own time but don't overlook the more esoteric Alpina B10 V8.

More understated than the M5 but still possessing a few subtle but nonetheless telling styling cues that betray the urge within...

I recently had a wee contretemps with one of these things on the motorway and whilst not wishing to be outrageously illegal, was more than a little surprised by just how fleet of foot the thing was in comparison to the old beetle noir.

These things can be had for similar money (circa £30k) and are generally 'fully loaded.' The real benefit is the presence of a rather fabulous slushbox which takes the sting out of our wonderful, slightly mobile car parks, aka the UK motorway network.

Buy one in black, drive to Europe and see some very high numbers indeed; it has no limiter...

Agree with DeRs sentiments, however the only downside with anything Alpina is insuring the bugger...loads of insurance companies won't insure them, for some bizarre reason....a work colleague had this problem not a year ago...

Hi

Ive just bought my Grey Met M5 on Friday and Ive gotta say its the best car ive bought to date and ive been through Subaru's, EVO's etc etc!

Best 4 door Super Saloon ive ever driven, looks stealth and goes like a F14

Used 2 tanks of juice in it since Friday just from getting use to it and I want more and more!!! can't wait to finish work just to get back into it.

Trust me the M5 will be the best purchase money will make.

There is an M5 buying guide in the current EVO.

A friend who had an M3 'upgraded' to an M5, said it was too grown up and went back to an M3. But then he doesn't have children.

I opted for a Scooby, but that was six years ago when they were still unknown.

No hesitation - go and buy an M5.

Having put 53,000 on my 98 Cerbera and 42,000 on my 2001 M5 I suspect you will not feel the difference in performance unless you take to a track. I look forward to driving either them on the road. They are so much fun.

B19TOY, is that your plate? I think I've seen that on a black Porsche around Warwickshire. Is that you?

search the threads here about M5's and vanos probs. They are not all necessary as well built as the image/hype suggests.

ive sort of wanted one since the end of last year....

prolly will still get one but i want a 2001 car with the facelift and M3 steering wheel etc. and i want to pay up to aroudn 27-28k so really just waiting for the prices to drop which they seem to be doing all the time. New 5 launch may see a further drop and if necessary ill wait till the new M comes out early next year.

BMW approved dealer cars MY 2000 are now dipping below 30k and ive seen one 2001 car advertised at just under 30k... thats a first cos ive been keeping an eye open for teh best part of 6 months. Some of the cars on autotrader have simply been there for months on end.... obviously they are proving very very hard to shift (something that you may like to consider before buying one).

Ive been through a lot of mental procesess if late and all sense says get the 530d for about 22k which will be far cheaper to run and hodl its value much better... drove one and its an aesome all round car with bags of low torque but i just dont love it enough to pay that sort of money when 2000 M5's can be had with warranty for as low as 25k (some from nonBMW dealers). Its either 7k's worth of vintage 740i or an M5 at 28k .... thats the way i see it.

But try to minimise what you pay - make silly offers cos these non-BM dealers and private sellers simply cant shift the things. Bear in mind that a 95' old generation M5 only makes low teens so a 2000 M5 for 28k will proly only be worth about 18k in 3 years time. Also, comms pack is a must for resale and avoid any wood trim. IMO Sutcliffe made a right blunder ... the whole point of teh M5 now is its value so why buy one for 35k.. he hasnt taken advantage of the situation and the he's prolly lost 7k just in teh last few months. But who knows, maybe he's got money to throw around.

I drove one and thought it was totally awesome and such a complete car. The engine is incredible with huge power low down and high up and it simply never lets up. Body control is utterely superb and the chassis is completely first rate (p1sses on the M3 chassis form a huge height). Ive drive the M3 twice and didnt like it at all but the M5 just blew me away. Its not the last word in driver involvement but then like others here ive done the evo/elise/caterham thing and now want something refined and grown up. Most important it has teh drive to teh correct whels and the engine in the right place.

Oh.. and warranty is a must

good luck, keep us posted with your moves
