E-36 Removing Handbrake Handle

Silly question, but any one removed the wood trim on an EVO on the handbrake handle??? Got an aluminium m-tec one to fit but do not know if there is a knack or just brute force? Cannot see any grub screws etc? Thanks.

I am led to believe that it is held on by magic, so brute force is the only option (or a stanley knife if it is plastic)
