Ok, waiting for my registration to activate.
Before hand, can anyone answer a quick question for me....
How much space is there really in the back?
The reasoning behind choosing a vaguely sensible car like a 3 series is the carrying capacity (comapred to an out and out sportscar, I realise it's not an estate!) One of my colleagues has an E36 318iS and said he found it very difficult loading his mountain bike frame in the back (with the car seats down and bike wheels removed) because although the space provides plenty of length and width it lacks height.
I can get my bike (minus a wheel) into the back of my ZS, so can't believe the BMW is that much worse.

Compact is the best bet for lugging stuff around as it's a hatchback. Whilst it is a bit of girlie car in terms of image, it does have rear suspension off the E30, and is supposedly a better drive than the coupe/saloon.
Coupe and Saloon with drop boots can carry a surprising amount - however, the boot aperture is very small, the rear arches are very large, and the through load aperture is only approx 2' x 1'.
