I need some advice guys on the oil consumption of BMW engines in particular the 3.0D.

I have had 3 BMW's with electronic dipsticks and 2 with a traditional dipstick.

Now on the 318i (Electronic), it needed 1/2 a litre of oil in 7,000 miles

On the Z4 3.0i (Electronic), we had it for 2,500 miles and it needed no oil adding

The X5 3.0D (Traditional Dipstick) 1 itre of oil in 6,000 miles, the first 1/4 litre being needed at 700 miles and then nothing since 4,000 miles

Ok with this in mind we have now had our 2 new cars delivered in the last month and I thought that as they were both diesels we would be using a lot of oil based on our previous experience of diesel cars and the X5 and of course the fact that they are "oil burners"

So first to the 120D (Electronic Dipstick). The car has done 1,000 miles and apparently needs no oil.

The 330D (Traditional Dipstick) and my big concern and why I need your advice.

I checked the oil on Friday night and left it for 5 mins after coming back to the house after a long run as the handbook says. The car has now done 500 miles and according to the dipstick needed 3/4 a litre of oil to fill it which I thought was unusual. So to be on the safe side I only put a 1/3 of a litre in. I then went to check the dipstick again and found that the oil level instead of going up was on the min mark. So i'm quite confused and concerned that the car in less than 2 weeks has used so much oil, when the 120D appears to have used nothing, but can't be checked manually for a like for like comparison.

Can anyone offer advice?

Run the engine for 30 seconds and switch off,let it settle for a few seconds.Pull the dipstick out, clean, put back in and pull straight back out. That should give you an accurate reading.

They can burn 1 litre for every 1000 miles on the 3 litre-the x5 burning even more.

If you have any doubts, get the stealer to check,or maybe drain the engine out into measuring jugs to ensure how much is in there

Thanks Black Spider.

So it doesn't need to be run to max operating temperature?
