Bluetooth in Z4C
Discussion
Hi all, do you know if BMW do regular updates to their bluetooth adapters. My wife's ericson works, but my Samsung doesn't - or rather does sometimes. Just wondered if there was a way to do a firware upgrade at the BMW side.
I find this whole BMW bluetooth strange, it's supposed to be a standard so why will it work with some and not others. it also appears that you will never be able to buy a new phone and gurantee it'll work, half the phones on the list at BMW don't even exist anymore.

Yeah, it's annoying isn't it...mind you I gather it's the phone manufacturers fault alot of the time for designing their blue tooth outside the standards. Mine's a case in point...I bought an SE 750i because it's on the list as being compatible and they make a cradle for it. It works perfectly for calls, but it only downloads some of the contact list into the car! So half the numbers I need aren't available without looking up contacts on the phone.
Annoying.

It's all down to software levels in both the phones and the vehicles phone control unit (TCU or ULF depending on spec). For example you may have a phone that works great; downloads the phonebook and never drops calls or fails to connect. However if you drop that phone down the toilet and get an identical (though brandnew phone) it'll have a different software level and may have limited functionality!
I'm afraid the bluetooth is just the protocol, but if the phone and the car arn't speaking the same 'language' at the right speed then you won't have compatability.
As for an update the phone control unit will need programming and perhaps even replacing (type dependent again) at your own cost, that is assuming the latest software is compatable with both your's and your wife's phones.
