Apologies for opening an old debate, but I was told yesterday by a BMW technician that the E90 has a sharksfin just for the satnav and that the bluetooth connection does not use it - i.e. even if the phone is docked then the phone transmits using its own ariel and not the one on the outside of the car.

This is different to the E46?

Does anyone have a definitive answer for this?

Nearly but completly wrong...

When the phone is docked in the cradle it is hard wired to the ULF/TCU (phone control unit) via an aerial lead, that is then in turn hard wired to the sharks fin on the roof which is both GPS and GSM(sat nav and phone).

If you have the phone on the seat or in the glove box then the phone talks to the ULF/TCU via a Bluetooth aerial located in the center console. This aerial is hard wired to the ULF/TCU which is hard wired to the Sharks fin.

So your answer is the sharks fin is for phone and sat nav

thanks both,

so basically if I am making (or receiving) a call from the car then the external aerial will be used?

The technician was quite adamant that he was told on a course that the fin was not used for the phone - should I let him know?

I have had a stupid grin on my face all day today - picked up a 335d yesterday....

Thats right,if it didnt then the overall call would be through a poor signal.
The tech may need to look at a wiring diagram of option 633/644..Its well documented..

thanks, I will pass the message on!

It is not my normal dealer and I have to say they are not as good, but then based on people's posts on here I am used to a very high standard at my local dealer.

I saw your other thread on Independent dealers - how close are you?
