Just realised when one went past, that the current M3 has 4 exhaust pipes. If it's a straight 6, how does that work - or is it a sham ?

I think it's jusr for show. Helps to distinguish from usual 3s. Much in the way you can get 4 pipe kits for Porsche 996 turbos.

The BMW M Coupe, which has the Evo straight six engine, also has 4 exhaust tips. However, in contrast to the E46 M3, where there is only one rear-muffler with 4 tips, the M Coupe runs two separate exhausts from the manifold, where they then split into two separate mufflers, each with two exhaust tips.

See www.geocities.com/bmw_z3_m_coupe/S50_B32_Engine.jpg (copy and paste) for a picture of the manifold.

Thanks. I guess it looks better than having a single tipped exhaust each side.

Cheers,

Andy.
