Hi All

I picked up my new (secondhand) Z4 a week ago, just starting to get comfortable in her.

She's going back to the dealers for a few bit n bobs this week so I have been busy checking everything works.

It's a 2004 2.5i SE with the standard bmw business single cd player. It would seem to have 8 speakers (footwell, door, behind wing mirror and behind the seats) - I can't hear anything at all from the small door speakers, or feel any movement when I put my hand against them.....

Should they work or are they just blanks relating to an upgrade option I don't have?

I would note that the sound quality is one of only two dissapointments (the other being the plastic doors handles - even my old vw golf managed metal ones!)

Thanks for your time.

Can't help you with the speakers. But I have the uprated Carver system (Premium sounds system) and it's awesome... I specifically looked for a car with this system after test driving one with the standard setup. Even at.... well high speeds... it can drown out the engine, road noise etc etc.

Maybe worth looking to see if you can fit this as an aftermarket, I think you'd just need two subwoofers and an amp.

Unless you've got an upgraded stereo fromBMw then the door speakers are just trim blanks. You get 6 speakers in the standard setup. Tweeters in door mirrors, bass in footwells and midrange behind your head. Adequate but not the best setup. It's tricky to upgrade as the speakers are very low impedance and you can't match them with aftermarket ones.

I upgraded mine by adding another bass channel with a small amp in the boot and speakers in the storage holes behind the seats. Makes quite a big improvement IMO.

Thanks for both your replies

At least I know that the speakers should'nt be producing a sound!

I will look into improving when I've paid a few other bills!
