Hi

I'm looking at getting a e36 328, i'm currently interested in a '98R, am i right in saying this is about the time the Nikaseal problems were present?

How do you go about checking if the necessery mods have been carried out?
Also what other known issues are there on these cars, this one in particular has 142k on the clock, is that something to be concerned about or do they go on forever, i do about 10k per annum.

Regards

A 98 car will have been after the Nikasil issues.

My 96 N plate car did 214k miles when I sold it after a replacement short engine at 40k by BMW. Would still happily pull well past 140.

Check for any hint on history not stacking up as these cars don't show their age/mileage and a very easily clocked.

Check front and rear bushes as much as possible, window lifters often fail, glove box gets tatty but is a cheap & easy fix.

Usual 2nd hand car buying stuff applies I guess.

My information is that nikasil engines were fitted up to build date week 10, 1998. though a lot of engines were replaced under warranty by BMW. Get the chassis no. and pop into a BM dealers and the service dept can tell you quite a lot.

I wouldn't worry too much about nikasil after nearly ten years if it was going to happen it would have done already! Engine deterioration doesn't happen instantly it just gets worse, so if it starts using oil then sell it

you say that but my 1997 328 suffered from it, just burnt oil then got worse and worse. new block and pistons and my wallet £1500 lighter it's all fixed. the dealer paid for my new block and pistons as BM refused to help and said at 10 years old they didn't have to either so be careful and check in with BM and see if it's had a new block ect
