This week I will be mostly be...replacing an 'O' ring
Discussion
They must love me,I have the task of replacing an 'O' ring in the cooling system on a '03 735i n62.
Sounds nice and easy..Take off the water pump and you can see and feel the 'O' ring.
How wrong you can be.To get to the little fella you need to remove the front timing cover, that means remove the engine, heads, sump and so on-in real time thats 30 hours work.
The 'O' ring is attached to the transfere pipe that runs to the rear of the crank case and I'll be quite honest im really suprised we havent seen this before and there hasnt been very many other reported cases of this in the network either. The rubber has gone brittle and cracked-this then lets the coolant travel out through a drilling in the bottom timing cover just up from the water pump.
Nice little earner though-apprx £4k.....not bad for a 25mm 'O' ring.
I hope to see lots of these when I set up in business later this year....only joking, hopefully its just a one off..

fook me, are there any other oddities like this that you've encountered?
Had to replace an entire vehicle loom on an E61 5 touring and 6 control units due to water ingress into the rear spare wheel compartment. It was caused by a £2 trim on the N/S tail gate strut with automatic lift.Trim was getting trapped and pushing the boot seal away letting water through.
The boot wells on all E60/61 upto march '05 hold several very important control units which are hidden under the trims. If water gets there they tend to pop and the loom corrodes.
Again a 30-40 hour job and the cost knocking £10k + luckily under warranty.
Fortunately these are all repairs that rarely happen,so dont panic!
