Been looking at the prices of 7 series… I have about £4k to spend on one and you seem to be able to buy a lot of car for your money! I will probably go for a 728! As fuel is a consideration and these seem to be the most economical…

If you were buying a 728 I at around £4k what would be the best specification to get? What are the options that are desirable and finally… what do I look for before buying!

Any other advice gratefully received!

IMO (having driven one) you may find that the 728 is a gutless pig and being underpowered you'll tend to use more revs than necessary in order to shift this very heavy car.
Its false economy to assume the smallest engine in the range will provide the best balance of power and fuel consumption.
Don't take my word for it, go and test drive one. Then, if you can, a 735/740i immediately afterwards.

Buy a V8, A 740. Like this one, and enjoy it.

....and good luck.

The 728 can't pull the skin off a rice pudding!!! As said before, go for bigger engine and it will give you better MPG as you don't have to strangle the life out of it.

Hang on... Hang on...
It really depends on what you expect from the car, performance wise. If you are not the sort of driver who likes to experience a surge of acceleration whenever you get the urge, then a 728 is actually fine. It can be moderately brisk when required but is at its happiest cruising and wafting around. With reasonably sensible driving they really are an economical proposition, particularly if long distance cruising at 70-80 is planned. Theyre not the sluggard theyre made out to be. I would never have given one garage space until I recently had occasion to sort out a tricky intermittant problem on a 2001 728 belonging to a friend. I was genuinely surprised how willing the car was (that six is just so creamy smooth and willing) and how economical it proved to be.
Having said all that, I'd buy a V8 or a V12 - cos I love the effortlessness of it all and hang the cost of the petrol!
