On my 335d when I come to start the car after it's been turned off a while, the brake pedal is very stiff and difficult to depress much at all. Start the car and it's fine and braking performance is as good as ever.

The car's only recently started doing this, so I suspect something isn't quite 100% right. Does anyone else experience this?

Thanks,

Gary.

What you are pressing against is the vacuum servo, the vacuum will disspate overnight and then will build up again when you start the car. It's normal for this to happen

Thats the correct operation for the brake pedal,as above has said the vacuum will dissapate overnight leaving a hard pedal.

You can replicate this if you start the engine and then turn it off-pump the pedal 2 - 3 times and you will feel the pedal will go rock hard, keep your foot on the pedal and start it up and the pedal will go soft again.

Been having the same trouble for a while mate! Took my E90 in for service and told them.
They booked it in a week later and replaced the servo, no questions! If it were normal then they would not have done the work. Brakes have been better since! No hard pedal.
Must be a diesel thing!! Is your car automatic aswell? Thats why we have to press brake pedal!! Manual owners would not notice problem.

was your brake pedal hard when the engine was running?

The OP was referring to it being hard only when the engine was turned off

Thanks for the replies. It wasn't just overnight it did it - once when parked up for a couple of hours, came back to it and rock-solid pedal. Maybe something to do with whether the brake pedal is pressed when the car is turned off? Also it only seems to have done it in the last few hundred miles butthis weekend it seems to have stopped doing it completely.

Gary.
