Warranty and engine mounts - worth a try?
Discussion
I had my engine changed in August last year (under warranty - phew!) and by Christmas the car had developed a "clunk". At first I thought this was a steering/suspension thing and finally had the car inspected (late April - the car was off the road in Feb and March) by my local garage who pronounced it with a clean bill of health in that respect, but said that there was some play in the engine mounts. They then proceeded top quote me £220 to change them, as they said that cos the car was 3 yrs old and with 109000 on the clock, it was deemed to be fair wear n tear.
Fair enough, so off I went to find a cheaper way of doing it, but no-one but BMW stocks the mounts. So I bought them and had them fitted locally, all up cost of £160. Nice saving.
Only thing is, when the garage that did the work took the mounts off, one of them had a stripped thread and it was that that was causing the "clunk", as it wasn't tightened down properly .....
My question is, if I now try to re-claim this from BMW cos they fitted the engine back incorrectly, what do you reckon the outcome would be? Money back or a polite pi$$ off?

In my experience, BMW warranties are very good. They replaced a cracked manifold on mine for example - 7 years old and 65000 miles.
Its really up to the dealer to ask, so ask to speak to the service manager. Point out that its less than a year since you had the engine replaced and you feel that you should be getting this for nothing. At the very least, you should not be paying labour.

Now turns out that the loss of power and loud whoosihing noises after a weekend trip to France is because of a fractured intercooler pipe. I don't know which one, cos the repair is being done onf Friday, but....... when I asked how that could've happened the response was " excessive engine movement or driving too hard, giving it too much left foot".
Oops! I'll try it on for the warranty though ....
