shocks for 840ci Help!!!
Discussion
my bmw 840ci has a bit of an annoying problem. it shudders and skips in the front suspension when it hit a medium pot hole on the road. the drivers side makes the most noise and its like a rattle from the spring.
due to the millions of pot holes on the roads at the moment i feel it need sorting!!!
i had the rubbers replaced by a specialist but only helped a small amount.
eurocar parts have got the centre of the shock which cost £134 each.
BMW have the complete shock and suggest replacing the drivers side hub.=£1200!!!
the question is will the centre of the shock be enough to resolve this problem. what would you do????
please help the car is superp in every way except for this..

Are you sure it is the shocks? I'm asking because you can experience very similar symptoms when there is any wear in either the idler arm or the inner/outer track rod ends. The wheel can shimmy violently when it hits a pothole or surface irregularity.
I have a couple of 850's and one had symptoms that I would have immediately said were due to worn shockers at the front. When I checked the steering linkage very thoroughly, I found that there was a little wear in the idler arm bush and in two of the track rod ends - not enough to normally be worried about but the design of the steering on the e31 means that everything adds up. Before changing the shocks, I fitted a new idler arm and replaced both track control rods, complete with new rod ends on either side. The car was transformed and the shimmy disappeared completely. It may be worth checking for the sake of less than £100 for all the parts. What is the mileage of the car?
