Hi chaps, friend of mine wants to upgrade the speakers in his 330coupe (2001 vintage). Does anyone know what size they are & have any good ideas?

cheers

Assuming his are standard, or even if he has the shockingly shite 'Hi-Fi' or Harmon Kardon upgrades (I have the hi-fi pack in mine, it really is terrible) then in all honesty absolutely any decent aftermarket direct replacement speakers will generate an improvement in sound.

Any decent car audio shop will be able to help - the BMW standard sizes are 5.25" IIRC. But any manufacturer worth their salt will do a specific fitment for the E46

JL Audio do a free air sub which fits the underneath of the rear shelf and works wonders without needing to resort to yoof type installations.

Simply cutting the door lining out from behind the stock speakers works wonders too, as they have no space behind them (or the shelf ones for that matter) into which they can vent.

I'd recommend MB Quart, JL Audio, Phoenix Gold, Focal, or Genesis - well built, brilliant sound.

When I have nothing else better to spend my money on, I'll be getting a Focal install in mine.

FYI, yesterday I talked with Car Audio Security (check on Google) regarding speakers for an E46.
Apparently the E46 uses component speakers in the front of the E46, with bass drivers in the doors and a seperate tweeter in the A pillar. Both of these are wired as standard. I'm told that groups like Focal make a nice component set of speakers at sensible(ish) prices which will be a direct drop in. As already mentioned, the main drives are 5.25".
