One of those private road speedbumps - the short, high ones - scraped the hell out of the underside of my M3 last week. The exhaust is now blowing, so took it the local garage up on the ramps....

The manifold ends under the car just beside the gearbox, and has taken a direct smack in the goolies. What the fcuk is that design all about?? The impact has caused the manifold to crack right at the joint where the main exhaust begins. Why have a hugely expensive and complex-to-fit manifold hanging around under the car where it can get bashed about (and break). German engineering - great design Fritz .

Anyway, garage then tells me that you can't weld the manifold as it's made from something or other that can't be welded (cast?), so a phone call to BMW - that's £530 odd for a new manifold then add VAT, fitting, coffee, donuts and whatever else they charge as extras these days.

Anyone had a similar problem with their manifold getting mashed by a speedhump?

Anyone know if the manifold could be welded and the garage just were trying it on?

Claim off the owner of the speed bump - if it was too high to negotiate then he was negligent!
