E28 Diagnostics?

My barge bargain E28 has an anoying fault. 1985 5201 with M20 engine.
About 9/10 times I go to start it it takes about 3 or 4 seconds of cranking to fire up, makes no difference if I press on the gas or not.
1/10 times it fires straight away.
Only done 59k miles and in all other respects runs v well.
Is there a way of plugging the car into a diagnostics compooter to find out whats wrong?
Losing fuel pressure, cold start injector not working are a couple of ideas I have.
Otherwise an utterly fabulous car.
