Which E92 3 series touring ?

I am thinking of getting my wife a new shape E92 3 series touring.

Which engine would people recommend as the best balance between purchase cost Vs smoothness/driving pleasure ?

I know the 33oD is highly recommended but they are also relatively expensive to buy.

failing that, I'd suggest the 320D M Sport tuned by DMS.
