I'm feeling pretty stupid at the moment.

I have a very newly aquired E39 530d 184 bhp vehicle that has covered a genuine 64000 miles. I decided to do a first time oil check on the car this weekend with the car level & stone cold & noticed that the oil level was 10mm below the min level on the dipstick. The car was driving perfectly with no sign of oil leaks or smoke.

I decided to top up the oil level without delay. It took about 2.5 litres to get the level to just above mid point between min & max on the dipstick. I then ran the engine for a few minutes & rechecked the oil level after 5 minutes which was still just above mid point.

I used the car yesterday for my usual 60 mile round trip suburban commmute to work & rechecked the oil when I got home. To my surprise the level as now showing 15-20mm ABOVE the max mark on the dipstick, & there was also evidence of fresh oil staining on the nearside of the plastic undertray below the engine.

I will now get the oil & filter changed without delay. However, can the forum please advise if 60 miles of use would have caused any damage to the engine or cat & also what might cause the discharge of oil noticable on the undertray by the nearside securing screws.

Thanks in advance

the oil level shouldn't change that much hot or cold, it doesn't expand as much as ATF does, but its best to check cold on level ground, if its checked hot, its advisable to leave the engine 5 - 10 mins after running to allow any oil to run back into the sump.

in days of old i'd sugest the engine was throwing excess oil out of the breathers, but i believe most modern engines are all recirculating, so i dont know if that would still be the case.. is there any sign of oil from the filler cap?

sorry i cant be much help here..

There are no visible signs of leaks from under the bonnet, including the oil filler cap & rocker cover.
