Hi all,

I'm currently on the lookout for a cheap(ish) vehicle for a European trip and have been offered the following:-

528SE automatic
1997
130,000 miles, full service history (need to verify whether full BMWSH or more likely local dealer)
In excellent condition both externally and internally

Now here is the 'sticky' point, it had a smack on the rear last Year and is now classed as a Cat D although the repair was completed by a BMW registered garage. I know the accident did not cause too much damage however obviously this must effect the price.

The car is on offer for £2,000

Does this sound a reasonable price? - too much, too cheap??!!

Is there anything I should specifically look out for on this model?

Apologies for all the questions but my BMW knowledge is not vast and I would appreciate any feedback you have!

Many thanks,
Stu

That seems reasonable. It's a high miler plus a Cat D, both of which will drive down the price.

Can you afford to punt £2K on it? Because if it were the right colour, I would. The 6-pot is a great engine and the E39 5er is a great drive.

ETA: As it's pre-98, check it for Nikasil problems (Google it if you're unaware of this) - this is where an inspection of that service history will reveal whether the engine's been replaced under warranty or not.
