The facts - 56 reg X5 4.4 6000 miles purchased from main dealer 10 days ago as ex-demo car, flat battery on Friday BMW Assist come out and all seems OK, then this morning flat battery again, BMW Assist have now taken to local dealers (different one than the dealers we purchased the car from). There also seems to be a problem with the 4 wheel drive.

1) Anyone had similar problems with an X5?

2) Does anyone know what we're likley to get as a courtesy car - are we entitled to another X5 or will we just get given a 1 series until the car is repaired?

Thanks in advance

As an Used Car Sales Manager for BMW, I have seen this a few times and the most likely explaination as to why this has happened is as follows:
It proberbly sat around the dealer for a while before you bought it. Lots of very short journeys just to shuffle it around the used car display, and opening the car to let people see inside it, all help drain the battery. Then just before you picked it up the valeters had the doors open and engine off for quite some time while they were cleaning it. The battery may have been very low but enough to start the car when you picked it up, or it went flat just before you were due to turn up, and had about an hour on charge, (not enough time to get the workshop involved, and the salesman looking for the quick easy fix, without upsetting you by delaying the handover) in the hope that after you have driven it around a bit it will sort itself out. The other warning lights will most likely clear themselves when it is fully charged/new battery again.

Re the battery go and buy for around £90 a CTEK trickle charger which will restore your battery to its original state...and works better than ust trying to drive the car to recharge it. 24 hours plugged in and you have a like new battery.

RE 4WD no idea. Sounds more serious.

If the battery has suffered a total discharge then it may be critically damaged and may never hold charge properly again. If the problem persists then insist the dealer replace the battery FOC.

Thanks for the suggestions

BMW Assist guy said it was holding a charge OK.

More concerned that the dealer is refusing to supply a loan car whilst they are looking at it. Is this BMW's usual policy on a dealer supplied 6 Month old car?

Usually when a car's recovered by BMW assist a loan car should be provided with no hassle. Kick up a fuss. Shocking service.

You automatically get a courtesy car from the warranty provision, but might be worth embarrassing the original dealer in to helping you out via a call to the dealer principle if required.

I have one of those chargers, it's very good, the Mini lives on it.

Disgusting service - kick up a huge fuss.

I've always received loan cars when mine is being looked at under warranty and I am a scruffy student in a hoody with a 140k mile 530i Sport!

To deny the owner of a £30k+ AUC a loan car is apalling.

BMW will loan you a car, don't give in to dealer bu11shit. If they dont have one ask for one from BMW GB.
