K&N, Pipercross, etc, etc DO they actually really make any difference. They claim increased power and mpg, and that they "breathe" better! I can understand them on tuned cars but do they make any real difference to the performance of unmolested standard BMWs, for instance. Any experiences/opinions appreciated.

If we are talking about drop in replacements for OE paper filters then.......

I fit them because if you plan to keep the car a while it's a long term saving and I tend to keep my cars for a long long time.

The one in my 7 series was first fitted to

2.5 Senator B then a succession of 3.0 and 3.0 24V Senators before finally being fitted to the E38 - I did however clean it after 150,000 miles (when it was fitted in my last Senator) of use but it probably didn't need it!!

I don't think you will notice much at all in terms of better mpg or improved performance if thats what you are expecting

There is some talk that oiled filters contaminate the MAF sensor (so be carefull) Not notice any problems in mine in 5000 miles

Yes, those are the ones. had a K&N on my previous 5 series, not sure it made any difference but sounded nice! K&Ns are oiled but I don't think french-made "Green" ones are! Thanks for the feedback.
