840, its a better balanced car, cheaper to run (if thats possible) and easier to live with. Neither car would ever be classed as a daily driver and if things go wrong...its going to be very expensive. 840 wins!

IMHO...Probably ultimately not a lot to separate them as each has their own plus/minus points and these have previously been debated here.

More important I would suggest is to consider the usual important things on secondhand cars eg. condition, history, mileage, price etc

I've owned both and currently have 2 850's. The 850 is considerably more relaxed than the 840 and delivers the performance on an immense wave of deliciously smooth torque. It goes faster with much less effort. You have to work an 840 quite hard to extract its performance whereas the V12 never feels like it is working hard.
The 850 CSi is a very different beast in every way (including price!). Very quick and amazingly agile for a big car thanks to the motorsport suspension and the fantastic active rear wheel steering. I have a Ci and a CSi and I sometimes wonder why they didnt make them all handle like a CSi. The Ci can be modified relatively cheaply to handle close to a CSi and still retain the comfort. Theyre stunning cars for the money.
And why buy a V8 when you can have a V12! There is very little difference in running costs and the V12 shows greater longevity, primarily because of its efforless torque that pushes you forward like a turbine, whatever the revs.
I know the 8 series inside out so if you need any help or advice, I'd be only too pleased to help.
