I've only just turned 18 a few months back and I'm looking (already) at snapping up a little Z4 whenever my insurance doesn't totally take the piss out of me about it. Assuming that I'm confident enough I wont have any claims on my insurance, what age am I looking at here?

How much are you hoping to spend? If you're happy to spend 2-2.5k on insurance, then you could get one now.

A mate has recently paid £2k to insure himself on a 2.5l Z4. First car, no claims, driving for 1 year, 0ncb, good postcode. He was 22 at the time though.

I've got an 18yr old mate who got insurance on a 330i for a similar amount with a fault claim under his belt.

Well it would have to be a loan obviously, and at the moment I'm clearing maybe 200 quid a month which isnt going to get me alot. I've been looking at the ones in the 15k region but only half-heartedly as I honestly don't see me in one untill atleast 21.

What does clearning 200 quid a month mean ? You have 200 quid a month left over ?

£6k loan over 3 years was roughly 185-190/month and that was before the interest rates went up.

I take it you are just looking at the insurance side with that money and have a wedge saved up for the metal?

I don't really have anything saved as Ive just took on another big(ger) purchase, I was just wondering about insurance really, just wanted to know what age that I can actually get insured for a car like that. Tried elephant and they told me to piss off till i was 21

Wait til you're 21, then the insurance will be more affordable, the Z4 will be cheaper to buy (and probably more plentiful of supply, so less compromise on engine/spec) and if you save that £200/month for 36 months you'll have a nice little sum of cash to put towards the vehicle you want.

Just a thought.

Keep a clean license, save your cash for a few years and just watch the prices fall. No point in just paying a huge insurance premium and then having no money for life, spares or even a deposit upon a house / flat whatever. Enjoy life, cars can wait.

I'm with the last 3 replies.

On the way home the other night I say a Spitfire on the back of a lowloader. Driver looked pleased as punch with his forthcoming restoration project.

And why not? Wind in the hair motoring incoming, classic car (no road tax?), probably paid next to nothing for it and when it's done he'll be have something individual that he loves. driving

My first chariot was a Corolla RWD twin cam coupe. I loved that car! Most of them seem to be at rally schools now. The guy who bought mine was going rallying in Ireland in it. I hope he didn't kill it.

They are not bad for young drivers with little or no no-claims

As stated above, just wait for at least 3 years, your insurance will drop and the Z4 will come down in price. Get your self a cheap car which will put a smile on your face for now and look forward to the fun that is coming
