Just had company out to replace a cracked windscreen under the insurance but it wasn't a BMW stamped item so I asked them to leave it and find out if I can get a genuine screen from BMW.

I'm sure I read somewhere the e39 w/s has a coating that allows rain to bead off at speed (am I imagining that?) and if that's the case then I assume a pattern item won't!
Also I want a BMW stamp on the window, that's what was there before and I thought they replaced like for like.

Was I right to reject the pattern screen and ask for a BMW item or doesn't make a difference?

I think the only issue with the non BMW screen is with the sensor for the automatic wipers.
I've read of people having problems with these following screen replacement. I've not heard of any magic coating.

Windscreen badge snobbery Not heard about the coating either but I admire your 'it had a badge, so it's having a badge' approach.

I don't know if they're supposed to be badged or not, but I just got mine replaced by Autoglass after some ar5ehole in a tipper truck pulled out in front of me on the motorway and dumped a brick on it.

The Autoglass guy phoned me before coming out to check exact date of registration because the sensors can be different. The actual sensor remains fixed to the car - the only bit that is on the windscreen is the shaded surround bit.

It's probably even more complicated that that.

A mate of mine recently needed a new screen for his E39 and couldn't believe it when he was told that there were about 14 different screens; different coatings, tints, sensor compatibility... etc., etc. - which one did sir require?!

They're just getting the ok from ins co and ordering me a screen from BMW.

There's a page in the manual under 'technical' (I think) about the w/s. And it does indeed have some kind of dirt/water repellant surface. There's a little diagram of a cross section showing how it's smoother than a babies bum and rain apparantly beads off at about 40mph.

I'll try and post a scan of it later....if I get chance.
