BMW specialist in Hampshire/West Sussex
Discussion
Hi, all. This is my first time on the BMW forum, so apologies if I ask a question that has been answered before.
I have a '99 740 which for the last three years has had a steering shudder/vibration problem. It occurs between 50 - 65mph, and gets especially bad on long runs. It is not the disks - I have replaced them twice so far as part of the diagnostic process - and it is not wheel balance - again, done twice so far. I previously owned an E34 M5, and I vaguely remember that it suffered a similar problem for a while, feeling like the wheels were a bit loose on the end of the suspension.
My local BMW dealer has been asked at the last two services to help me fix it. The first time they didn't bother looking (just did the service), the second time they charged me £25 on top of the service cost to diagnose the problem. Trouble is, when the work was done, the problem was still there. I couldn't take it back to them as I have a man (mechanical wizard - re-builds classic Ferrari engines and such like) who does most of the non-serice work on my cars. I trust him over any main dealer mechanic. He did the work they specified, which was to replace all three steering arms, and this still didn't fix it. I have had two other people have a go at sorting this problem and still it is with me. I have now replaced various parts and spent quite a lot of money. It is driving me mad!
What I want to do is find a BMW specialist, ideally in Hampshire or West Sussex, that knows these slightly older BMW cars, and who will have more interest in resolving my problem than a main dealer, which is typically only interested in dealing with customers with cars funded on non-questioning corporate accounts. If anyone has any ideas, or could suggest a specialist, I would be un-endingly grateful.
Thanks, Vince
