E39 Power Steering Noise

Not had the 540 long and have noticed a sort of grinding/whirring noise when turning at low speeds like when parking, turning round etc. assume its the power steering pump.

Is this normal or should the power steering be silent? Anything i should check?

Check the power steering fluid level

Just checked seems to be up to the top mark. Anything else it could be?

I had a noisy PS pump on my E46, got steadily louder over about 6 months, then the pump gave out when I started it one time. Cost me 500 quid to replace at the dealer.
