E39 Buying Advice - Knocking sound?

Hi everyone,
I will shortly be crossing over to BMW world and i'm looking to buy a 2002 525 TDS SE from a friend but I have a couple of questions before I do.
I have driven this car a few times now and the only thing that concerns me is a knocking sound thats occuring under acceleration, the car only makes this noise if you are accelerating quite hard from standstill, if you accelerate smoothly to say 10-15mph and then give it some there is no knock, seems to be the transition from standstill to drive only oh and I have been leaving it in drive so cant be related to selecting gears?
The next question is regarding smoke, this will be my first diesel and I realise they are smokers but how much should I be seeing and what colour etc... this car tends to be quite smoky when cold and accelerating but gets a lot better once warmed up.
