My 16:9 screen is very cool and even plays freeview stuff witch I was amazed at, but when viewing a 16:9 image (ie. most channels and programes now) It stretches the picture out widthwise but not top to bottom!!

Many channels look stretched out but still have the black band top and bottom. I've tried switching between 4:3 and 16:9 mode but it still wont stretch it out top and bottom.

Very annoying.

Any ideas.

Its not a true 16:9 image hence the black bars I am presuming you have an LCD TV in which case there will normally be an option to view the screen in 1:1 format (on mine i think i have 1:1. 4:3, 16:9, 16:10 etc), ie the broadcasts natural resolution. You may end up losing even more picture but at least everyone will be the right width. Failing that, alot of tv's have Smart Stretch or Pan and Scan, which will use the whole screen, but this is not best for picture quality.

I have to disagree!

If you switch to 4:3 mode and find a channel which is in 16:9 (ie BBC1,2,3 ITV1,2,3 ect) then switch the screen to 16:9 mode, it just stretches the picture horizontally, not vertically aswell.

Any other LCD etc would stretch both horiz and vertically.

I wonder / assume it would be a simple software fix that BMW could make.
