I'm now collecting my new Z4 coupe from the factory in Munich! Theres a new BMW World over there to have a look around and you get your car from the line (well i'm sure it's a pretend line but you get the idea!)

Should be a laugh- i'm going to write about it on the Features page when I get back (still got to wait until May!) Anyone know a decent Munich to UK drive??

As Z4 is built in america then I guess it must be pretend

The factory at dingolfing, the museum, bayern munichs stadium etc were all fantastic..
When I past BMW Masters they sent me to munich for a week on a business trip-amazing fun,I was there for the octobe fest aswell..Mmmmmmm beer.

Their way of working and living is so much more efficeint than ours, alot easier.Thats another reason why I want to emigrate

A sad statistic for you...All 23000 of the dingolfing factory workers are bused in every day...The buses they use travel an equal distance of once around the world each day.......

The chassis of the Phantom is made there, they can produce any 5,6 or 7 in any colour in any order at any time to any spec for any world market. No other manufactorer can do this

They also have their own rail network to ship the cars.

I'll get my coat.

All of the Z4 Series is produced at BMW's Spartanburg Plant in South Carolina and they serve all BMW markets. All but the first 40 or so Alpina Roadster S cars were also built in the States before being finished at Buchloe.

If you have the time drive over to Aachen first to visit AC Schnitzer, and then work south taking in Hartge, Hamann and the 'Ring on the way down. You could also visit Porsche and Mercedes in Stuttgart on the way through. Probably take circa 4 days at an easy pace.
Once at Munich I'd certainly recommend a two hour drive south to the Berchtesgaden area to visit the Eagles Nest and take in the stunning views. You could also visit Buchloe, the HQ of Alpina, which is circa 40 minutes from Munich. On the way back I would stop over in Epernay to sample the great restaurants and cheap champagne before a small detour to spend the night in Bruges sampling the great restaurants there before crossing the channel. An all-new BMW Museum/BMW Welte complex is due to open later this year in Munich but is running a little behind schedule, and this will replace the Olympic Park facility that is now partially closed.

Hope you have a great time.

Fascinating, no really

Did the factory tour, museum, etc. Been twice and plan to go again. Visited AC Schnitzer as well which was very good. Plan to see Alpina next time. Edit biggest bonus was personal guided tour round Mobile Tradition

Wow, you have to admire the levels of knowledge PHers have, thanks to the both of you. As I learn more about the trip from BMW I may be asking more advice!

Cheers

Have to say I did the TVR self guidance shed "tour" in Blackpool and the 2 manufactorers are worlds(galaxys) apart.
TVR with their workers crawling around on all 4's in the fibre dust,no heating bits laying around everywhere, scrapyard outside with bits of nose, chassis, prototypes stacked on each other and so on.
And to top it all they gave me £5 to go and get chips for lunch.
BMW,as you would expect....Spotless with a huge restaurant serving everything except junk...I had the veal

garlick, you may want to drive a small diversion if you have to be economic with your time; use the A95 down Garmisch-Partenkichen and proceed to Füssen, where you can see Schloß Neuschwanstein. Then use the Autobahn A7 to get up north! It's only two lane per direction, but it is almost derestricted, and there is not much traffic. Use the A3 or A44 to get west into B/NL direction. You won't be passing Buchloe that way though.

When you have lunch in Munich, visit the Hofbräuhaus (only tourists) or the Fraunhofer (some locals) and have a Krustenbraten and a Helles or five. I rate the latter highly!!

What date will you be travelling?

Hi ... Your guess is correct.
The Sat Nav is fine thanks, and following your update of the software I managed to pick up an 07-01 DVD on Ebay so I've now got the latest maps/additional functionality too.

The Cotswold dealership visit was enjoyed by all and I contacted BMW UK HQ to make them aware of how well we were looked after. There is also a summary submitted for the BMWCC Mag for April's circulation and the dealership will be "sponsoring" future Central updates in the mag.

Although I live in Nuneaton I will be booking the car in with you for its first MOT in May, and also its next service, based upon the excellent way we were looked after. It's the best "service" I have ever received from any dealership.

A formal "Thank You" has already been given to the dealership, but can you please pass on our thanks and appreciation to all of your colleagues for a great day.

I'll be down on/around the 23rd of May, and will perhaps see you then.

Ta Bodo- deristricted sounds fun- never done that before. I'm going over back end of April (awaiting actual car complete date- fairly spec heavy so had to wait for factory build) so hopefully get some Spring weather too.

I'll def stop over and take in a few Helles!

Not too much of a surprise, they are legally required to
do so.

IIRC, in Bavaria, beer is liquid bread, and workers must
be fed and watered.

BTW, I recommend the Audi museum in Ingolstadt, about
an hour North of Munich.

There is much to do in Munich. Personally I like to visit
the Lenbachhaus everytime. Interesting modern art.
Like the Tate Modern except good art.

I wouldn't bother with the Hofbrauhaus - too tourist central
and it gets very busy and very noisy anywhere near the band.

Suggest any of the other central beer places.

There is one around the back of the main train station
that is quite good - no tourists.

Can't imagine that; more like they are allowed to have half a litre in their lunch break, as beer is acknowledged nutrition in Bavaria, and typically served with Weisswurst-breakfast, which is traditionally only available until 12:00!

garlick, you may want to try your beers already the evening before you set off, so you have zero‰ alcohol when driving as fast as you like

The Deutsches Museum in Munich is definitely worth a visit, though it will take up a fair bit of time as it is massive. It has some great exhibits, including many aircraft and a U-Boat.

The Dachau Visitors Centre is only a 1/2 hour drive from Munich and well worth the trip, though it is a very humbling experience.
