Hello

The water pump on my car packed in today at lunchtime. The recovery man pointed out the fault, I though it might have been a split hose. Question is when I order a new pump is there anything else I need to buy like a gasket? I have it booked into my local garage next week

Cheers

If its an E46 then thats all you need-the seal is integral.
All the hoses etc are fast fit and need no clips.
only extra is antifreeze

check your fan belt is ok though, on my E46 i had my water pump went (2 days before i sold it, theres luck for you) and it caused the fan belt to come off and put a few dinks in it...

worth a check though, a new pump and belt came to £135 all in for me...

Yes its an E46 model. I picked a new water pump at lunchtime today from www.gsfcarparts.com/ in Farnham. Its not a BMW replacement but should do the job. My mechanincal knowledge is average at best. When you say check the fan belt, is this the belt that attaches to the pump and other components?
I am going to attempt to replace it tomorrow with my Father. Is it an easy job? I see the 4 bolts on the pump cover that will need to be removed, how much more is involved? I know I will have to remove the water hose that is in the way. Is this all we'll need to take off?

Nice and easyish.
If you have the electric fan version-remove(torx 25 and a clip, electrical connector-lift up and out
Remove the alt.belt (16mm on a ratchet)
Undo 4 10mm bolts and remove pump pully-remember routing of belt-you dont need to remove aircon belt.
Undo 10mm bolts from pump and remove.
Clean area and refit with new-bleed cooling system

If you have viscous fan version its the same but remove fan cowling.
Remove fan-32mm spanner required.

my car was a 2001 318i so it may be different.

but i didnt have the correct torsion tools to take off / on the fan belt.

yes the water pump is connected to the fan belt, its the upper most spindle when looking at the engine (on my 318 it was mind you)

also the water pump sits touching the head gasket and i didn't want to rist damaging it so i payed for the pros to do it.. only cost £135 and it was perfect.

depends how mechanically confident you are...

My Dad fixed it this afternoon,. It took around 2 hours, took off the alternator, I realised this wasn't neccesary afterwards. The belt tensioner is just to the right of the pump. Thanks for your help

edited after Dad's comments. Lesson learned, never claim credit for something you didn't do

Dear All,
As Tim330's Father I would like to add the comment that I changed the water pump. He did he did however lend a hand to help me retreive a ratchet bar and socket which slipped out of my hand and lodged itself on the drip tray which I managed to drop on one side.

I realised that the alternator could stay in situ after I had removed it.
The water pump was devoid of any bearings most of the bits were lying on the drip tray, the pump had an inch of movemement in most directions.

Fairly easy to remove as it sits on the front of the block unlike most which are tucked away and driven by the cam belt on transverse engines.

As for cost well the pump was £35 not 100 and something from a dealer and looked OK. As for labour then 2-3 hours of my time at 1 cup of tea seems much cheaper than £99 ph.

That's what Fathers are for I hear the cry as this is a continuing saga from bikes through to cars continues. Are ther any more out there ??????

Must admit a nicely put together car which drives rather well and covers the ground rather quickly.

Regards
Andy CDTi (lots more to the gallon)
