Probably been asked a load of times before but it's a dilemma i'm now facing and i'm looking for a range of opinions to help me sort it out. In Aug 2005 I bought a 3,000 mile July 04 M3, great spec with all the right kit and at the right price, problem is mileage, i'm now doing about 25,000 miles pa and the car has 39,000 miles on it and it's dropping like a stone. I wanted the new M3 but at the sort of mileage I do I simply can't see my car being worth anything in year's time with 64,000 on the clock and I don't want to spend 55k on a car. So, i'm looking at alternatives and naturally a diesel springs to mind, especially the 335cdsport. Anyone driven one, i know it's not going to feel or drive like an M3 even if remapped but if needs must and all that and I quite fancy buying a caterham for the weekends anyway so this might be the best option. Anyone also driven a 535d with a 335d back to back or anyone have any views on my predicament?

The 335d is awesome even in auto guise, i have driven a remapped one with 321bhp I am sure you would not get there any quicker in your M3, for some more views join www.bmwland.co.uk and pose the question..

Not sure what you're getting at really.

The M3 is worth what? somewhere between 20 and 25k say?

You want to spend 35k ish on a brand new car because you're doing big miles.

The 335 will drop like a stone to - like 17.5% the moment you dirve it out of the showroom and continue dropping as you continue to put miles on it. Ok so diesel economy wise may be cheaper but not that much cheaper!

Keep the M3, put the big miles on and accept that it's going to cost to drive an expensive car a long distance regardless of whether it's an M3 or a 335d.

Lots of folk kid themselves that because they're doing big mileage they need to change the car: the financial reality is that it's always cheaper to put miles on the car you've got.

Another alternative is to keep the M3 for weekends and A/B-roads and spend £8k on an early E46 320d for the long motorway trips.

The M3 is not a good enough car for A/B roads to warrant keeping it for weekends and I wasn't necessarily going to buy new although a 335cds would be but based on what i'm told I could swap out of my exisiting finance agreement and into a new diesel for the same monthly outlay and no deposit, if I thought the depreciation might slow then I might be tempted to keep it but I fear that in 1 year's time it'll be worth about 13k, another 10k drop and that's not funny!

OK, sell the M3, buy the 320d and have £15k to spend on a toy...

How long will your existing agreement be extended by though ?
I'd run the old car until reliability becomes an issue.

335d is a lovely piece of kit though.
