Odd clicking noise from steering wheel??

My wife has just acquired a 3 series touring (2001 Y) and when steering there is a strange clicking sound similar to the one when an indicator is cancelled, but in several places around the steering motion!!
Can anyone shed any light??

Sounds like the steering slip ring is damaged-behind the steering wheel.
Takes about 20 minutes to replace

Thanks for that - something I can do or is it airbag/dealer job? (Any idea what cost may be??)
