Hi Chaps,

Just bought a 2005 X5 3.0d Sport Exclusive Edition today. Very pleased although I won't collect it till next week.

The car has all the toys inc. nav/tv/roof/hifi etc. and I'm told Aux heating.

I got there to see it this afternoon and expected to see a 2nd remote that sits in my kitchin with a button that I press 20 mins before I set off on those cold mornings.

The display screen shows aux heat and then a time screen that you can set.

I assume this means that I can manually set it to come on, but the question is, can I get the remote module retrofitted or do I just have to jump in each morning and set it to start in 1 minute, then jump out and go for the cornflakes?

I don't leave the house at a regular time so the remote would be a brilliant touch to a superb car. (I hope! )

Any help much appreciated.

Regards,
Greg

All diesels have the ability to have the aux heater but few have it. You can set a timer to pour in air from the outside at 'outside' temperature but unless you have the aux heater it will not be what you expect.

The retro fit in the UK is about £700. Its cost and added value depends if you suffer from the cold I guess!

There is an aux heater fitted. I've seen it!

And the nav system is able to be set to come on at a preset time, but do I have to do that manually every morning 1 minute before I want it to start or can I get the remote part retrofitted?

Thanks,
Greg

That's not the complete aux heater kit but it is used to heat the engine on a cold day. You'll find on a cold morning you hear a clicking/knocking coming from under the passenger seat and that's the box you've seen. You will also see a small exhaust pipe under the car on the passenger side.

In the car without the full aux kit, this box of tricks does nothing to heat the car....sorry.

I thought it was a big box with plumbing and wires coming from it about 6" inside the engine bay from the screen on the passenger side at bonnet height?

Thats what I was told.

I thank you for your corrections Sir.

That is the Aux heat box but without the other components to go with it, it's simply a cold morning engine heater

I have this option on my Touareg - made by Webasto - one of their websites suggests that if you have a direct injection diesel with supplementary heater fitted you might be able to upgrade the system.

Really good option - let it run for 20 mins in the morning before venturing out and it's toasty inside - it can be used to cool the car as well via the air-con in the Summer. Remote has very powerful range, timer inside the car allows morning and evening pre-sets.

X5 and E39 diesels come with aux heating as standard.

If you have on board monitor its listed aux heater-this lets you set the time.

If you have radio MID press the clock symbol and it will take you to the time set.

So of these systems if tey arent used fall asleep and need to be worked through a diagnostic program to wake them back up.

I think from the top of my head its page 81 in the handbook.

This is not an engine warmer. Its linked into the matrix side of the heating.

You can retrofit a remote to the system, think thats about £250 ish

Just had a quick peak at the Webasto website as I have been interested in the concept of these systems foa a while...

However, it's interesting to see a figure of 0.25ltrs of fuel for a 30min pre heat!

I wonder if 30mins is enough when it's really cold outside?

I was up in the Alps rcently and on leaving the resort, I did 25mins of downhill driving in my diesel Ford and the bloody temperature guage didn't even move off the stop and if it wasn't for electric seat heaters, it woul dhave been bloddy unpleasant. It was bad enough as it was but at least I was getting 99.9mpg fuel economy!

That's a new one on me. The stealer swore blind that the Webwhatsit box in the engine simply helped the car heat up and had no use whatsoever for anything else unless I crossed his palm with silver!

Does that mean my 4.8 has it as I have the Aux heater setting on the sat nav? (there is no webwhatsit box under the bonnet though)

Cheers

You need a webasto T80 or T90 telestart kit from germany for about £100
You can fit this yourself easily, just press the button in the morning, 30 mins later a fully heater car.

Interesting thread on topic here.

I think maybe the T91 Webasto thing is all we need and that all the rest of the kit is already there. (if you have the ability to set the timer already)

I'm going to call the BMW dealer and see tomorrow.

Its a dealer fit option anyway so the likeleyhood is that they'll just say yes we can fit it for £715 as it costs in the options list for remote aux heating control.

Only the deisels came with the unit.As the petrol engine runs hotter and gets warmer quicker there was no need for it to be fitted.
