There is been an ongoing saga with my bm... most of the time it behaves impeccably but sometimes it decides to misbehave...

the car in question is a 2004 316ti sport with only 9500miles

cutting a long story short... i have the following issues.

1) lack of power between 1000 rpm and 2200 rpm mainly noticable when accelerating in 2nd and 3rd... this doesnt happen all the time (ok 85 - 90% of the time) and i appreciate that the 1.8 engine isnt the most powerful engine but i expect smooth and consistant power delivery...

2) when stationary in traffic (or when car is at idle) the revs sometimes drop then pickup again. when this happens it is like a little misfire and can be felt a little. again this happens very rarely (3-4 times a day) but can sometimes go without happening for a few days.
also the engine idles at different speeds (even during the same journey) usual is say 800ish rpm with climate on but goes up to 900 rpm and as low as 700 rpm

3) the dreaded jerky gear change... at lower revs it is impossible to get a smooth gear change.

the 1st 2 issues have been mentioned to my main dealer a good few times over the last 6 or so months... each time the response has been plugged it to diagnostics and caompared to others cars... it seems normal and no fault codes have been logged.

in dec i took my car in for a oil service as it was due and mentioned these issues again... dealer recognised the fault and suggested that the ecu software needed to be upgraded... me thinks result... wrong i was told that the computer system was faulty and to contact them in after xmas to book in and upgrade s.ware... when i did this they said "sorry sir but we dont have any notes or reference to this"... i had seen the office copy of the invoice on which the techs notes mentioned this... any after a long conversation they said they would reset the ecu values so that the car goes back to adaptive mode and to give that a few weeks to see if the issue is resolved... so here we are

what i would like to know from the bmwland knowledge bank is if there are any tsb which i could quote to get them to resolve the issue, or if anyone else with a n42 (1.8 valvetronic engined car) has had similar issues and if / how they got them resloved.

i will be taking this further with the dealer but this time i want to go in there armed (with TSB numbers, known issues, recalls etc)... last time even when i suggested what i thought the problems could be (cam / crank sensors, software upgrade, air / induction leak etc etc) their responce was always no fault codes logged...

and as the icing on the cake a also complained that the driver side selt belt clasp rattles... they charged me £40 to "remove a foreign body" from it... yes you've guess rattle now returns...

sorry for the long post but i am really getting annoyed now and my confidence in the bmw brand is starting to fall and was even thinking what i bought a ??? instead...

any advice is very much appreciated....

I don't know if it's any help but have you tried leaving the air conditioning switched off? It robs a noticable amount of power off the engine when the pump is running especially at low rpm's. The pump only runs when it's needed and if it kicked in at low rpms in 2nd gear it would make quite a difference. If not it really sounds like a dealer problem to me.

Get the car to your local independent and have the fault codes read (if there are any stored).
Will ocst about £30 and will indicate what the problem might be - cam sensor, coil pack, etc
