Service indicator reset - 2002 325i Sport

Please can anyone tell me how to reset the service indicator on this car? It's an Oct 02 car and AFAIK can be done from the dashboard. I managed to reset the brake fluid change date by accident, but the Oil Service defeated me! I know how to do it on an E39 5 series but this car seems to have a different sequence that I can't work out.

ignition off press and hold button on dash between fuel gauge and speedo
turn ignition on to position 1
after 5 seconds words oil service or inspection are shown with reset
release button then repress button after 5 seconds reset will flash release button then press button again now new service will be displayed.
press and release button once more diplay will show end sia turn off ignition
finished

this will not work on my car, does it need any fault codes removing from the ecu?

That's what I'd tried before. It does the brake fluid change date only.

Can anyone else help please?
