There's 2 seconds in it to 60mph apparently, but the 18d is a bit more frugal than the 20d.

Anyone have any real world experience of them and how they drive? Are they actually different power plants or a classic BMW, detuned and de-capacity-badged?

Really liking the 318/320d M Sport models of the new 3 series. Thinking come summer time I may get shot of the Golf and treat myself to a finance agreement.

I would go for the 320D. It is a fantastic engine and has recently been upgraded to 177bhp. I am not sure if that engine is going into the 3 series saloon/touring just yet. It is going into the coupe, 1 series and 5 series, but I think they are saving it for facelift time for most of the 3 series range.

I can highly recommend the new 3 series, it is a very good car.

I can answer your question, but only if the engine is fitted to a 1er.

The 118d has a more progressive boost setup, due to the smaller turbocharger. Rather than being all or nothing, it comes on boost in a more linear manner, compared to the 120d. I found it perhaps easier to drive, as the lag is less pronounced, but obviously the trade off is lower performance. On my usual 170 miles round trip to work I averaged 53.5mpg.

IIRC the gear ratios are slightly lower in the higher gears too, to maintain acceleration at higher speeds. The offset with this is the engine is running slightly faster on the m'way.

The 120d is heaps faster, especially once rolling (Faster than my previous MINI Cooper S). Even in 6th (37.5mph/1000rpm) there is still decent shove once you are above 1500rpm (55-60mph). On my run into work I average 47-48mpg. The major difference is in overtaking ability (on fast A-roads). In the 118d you have to pick your moments, in the 120d suddenly you can overtake in places that you wouldn't in the 118d.

If you're planning mainly m'way then the 318d would be fine, add a mix of fast-ish A roads then I'd go 320d.

Remember though the 3er weighes around 100kg more than the 1er, so the performance won't be quite as strong.

HTH

I drove one of these on Saturday before choosing a Z4 Coupe. The 325 is an amazing piece of kit, very quick indeed.
