Hi....my Mrs has an aging T plate 3 series, about 120k on the clock. Car has developed a tendency deliver a severe shudder through the steering wheel. Shudder occurs at various speeds and on certain journeys there is no shake at all - shuddering isn't related to braking. Had tyres checked and balanced today and still it's shuddering. I'm concerned there's an uderlying problem that's making the car unsafe...any advice would be much appreciated.

I've seen this attributed to worn wheel bearings in previous threads. Just one of many possibilities I suppose.

After she's been driving it, check the wheels to see if one is hotter than the rest. If it is, then it's likely to be the brake caliper siezing and sticking on. It creates excess heat, and makes the steering judder. Not too expensive a repair if you get an exchange unit.

Could also be front ball joints as the E36 had a tendency for eating these and could give the symptoms you describe

Thanks folks, putting into garage next week. My good lady was planning drive home north of Inverness but not with the thing handling like a kamikaze bomber!
