I've posted this request for info in one of the BMW groups but would also appreciate feedback from the PH BMW brain trust.

My 02 530d auto (100K miles) has a small oil leak underneath the turbo.

Does this sound like a simple seal replacement or are we looking at a £500 + labour for an exchange turbo (tripple this at main dealer no doubt)?

Appreciate your thoughts.

Before replacing the turbo, check and replace the crankcase breather that sits on top of the engine-under the top covers between the injectors and air filter.
It has a foam filter that blocks up-this causes oil to run into the turbo and pipes. You tend to get oil dripping from the bottom turbo pipe and sometimes blue smoke.
7/10 its this at fault not the turbo
The black housing is held on by 4 5mm allen bolts.
The filter is now a servicable item at 60000 miles and the part about £15.

Worth checking first

Good.

I'll go order one tomorrow on my way to having my oil cooler rad replaced as the car has also been drinking power steering fluid these past few weeks and only today was it determined that it's leaking.

Thanks

Phil

Have now replaced this filter and then washed the area.

It seems to have cured the problem - so far:-)

Many thanks.
