Mr 3 Series M Badge
Discussion
Driving home last night I spotted a v.nice 3 series 5dr in dark blue sporting an M badge on the back.
Obviously I was v.excited initially then realised that the new M car is not out till much later this year. I took some pictures just incase.
Personally I can not see why anyone would do this but I am sure there are some peeps on here who have done the same in the past.
Roll on september and the real thing

Sorry Neil, no they don't. Some so and so has just stuck that badge on your car.
The only non-Motorsport engined/built cars to correctly carry an ///M badge are:
Firstly, the E28 M535i (E12 M535i is regarded as a Motorsport Division built car). It carried a simple ///M with no other model inscription. In the same way as the european M635i (with the proper Motorsport engine) also carried a simple ///M. The U.S version called "M6" carried the M plus a "6" on thr front and back.
Secondly, the Canada only, E34 M540i.

I was a little unsure - I am under no illusions that I do NOT have a ///M car - its just a hyped up 328i with the better suspension.
However, is the badge standard on the E36 Sports, or was it an 'option' hence me getting it so wrong?
ETA Atually, mine only had an ///M badge - is that the same as the above or not?
does my ///M badge omit and 316i badge replacement make my glaring wrongness any better?

When you bought an E36 with Sport Pack you would get the smattering of M Badges, steering wheel, gear knob, rubbing strips as well as other goodies, mtech suspension, anthracite roof lining, sports steering wheel, mtech bumpers and skirts etc.
Edit - never an M badge on the boot only normal model description 328i eg. because its not an ///M car

Got all those, but it came with the ///M badge but no 328i moniker. I thought that was how it was supposed to be, but thats not to say that the previous owner may have added it.
Obviously, I've now badged it as a 316i

It would have originaly had 328i on the boot, all other M badges you mention are part of the Sport Pack. I have a E36 318is I bought new with Sport Pack, only difference to your 328i is 17" cross spokes alloys to my 16" double spoke alloys and of course 2 cylinders and 57hp.

Neil,
I'm fairly confident that the E36 328i Sport should be badged '328i' on the boot.
I hadn't realised that some 325's carried them from new...one learns something everyday. I wonder then if the 250 Motorsport Cabrios also had them? Anyone know?
Cheers

Yes they did.
Edit - did you mean E30? If yes answer still yes.

Now I know I was right to take the badge off.
Am I wrong to have a laugh with the 316 badge, or should I take that off and leave it debadged?
For Sale: One well cared for ///M badge

Up to you, free country and personal choice etc. Me, I would remove the badge, leave it blank. Dont forget the biggest give away about having an M car or not is wing mirrors.

Oi!
I didn't buy the Sport because I wanted to look like an M3!!!
Do NOT get me wrong, I'm not trying to look like an M3 - I can spot a fake a mile off, however I was trying to be a bit ironic - I'd have thought that it would be quite funny to annoy reps in the outside lane when they get dropped by a 1.6

ETA: If I ever do get an M3, I'd be taking off the mirrors, and replacing them with normal ones - I hate the look of them - far too chavvie. The rest is fine.
Also I'd be trying to get the non lairy interior...

I'm sorry that was not what I was suggesting. Regarding the 316 badge, I dont know if I'd bother, in fact I wouldn't. Saying that I did once have a Mk2 Escort with 2.0s Capri engine with twin 45 DCOE's and other tasty mods that was badged 1.3

Edit - give me that lairy interior any day

I have a 328i sport, yes it has the M badges on the gear lever, handbrake, door bump strips e.t.c but not M on the back. I wouldn't be seen dead with an M badge on the back unless it said M3 and it was the real thing.
You can really start to worry when people with 1.6/1.8/2.0 engines put an m3 badge on the back because E36 M3's have twin standard exhausts like a 328i (but slightly different IIR) where as these models have a single P shooter.
Like someone else said with the wing mirrors, you can tell a fake M3 miles off especially when they dont have the darf vader looking seats, unless its a convertable.
The only badge I might put on the back (for people with not too much knowledge about BMW's) is a 318i or something....just for a laugh!

I'm already there

Annoyed a 330D rep yesterday evening when he thought he'd 'show' me how it is done.
Needless to say his face was picture when I filtered past him onto a clear dual carraigeway and proceeded to keep him at bay all the way up to some illegal figures. He was only just starting to claw me back at about 0.9 leptons, and certainly not enough to get past in the other lane

£2.99 well spent on that badge I think - his face was hilarious thinking he couldn't get past a lowly 316i

Derin 'I think' they do, if they didnt just about everyone ever built now sports one, and as to the 328i Sport, yes badged to the rear with '328i' though they did sport the 'M' logo on the side rubbing strip on the leading edge of the door IIRC
