Morning all.

Usually a Porsche forum user, but considering a move to the other side confused I'm seriously considering chopping in my 2000 Boxster S for a Z4 coupe 3.0 Si- anyone one here had any experience of this model, test drive tells me it's like this driving but then it was only for 20 miles or so.

I really love my Box, so want to be sure I'm doing the right thing.....oh, and I can't afford the M!!

Hi Steve

I really like the Boxster, however I'm enjoying the thought of driving of a Z. Quite fancy black with red leather?

So do you use yours as a daily driver? I want to, but also use it for European drives, Le Mans and track days etc- do you reckon it would be good for that? The Box isn't great on space for luggage and general crap, how about the Z- can you live with it as it seems to have less boot space?

I guess I just want to know if the car has soul? I enjoy the Porsche as it feels and sounds special when you drive it- is the same true of the BMW?

Just so you're aware, the 3.0Si won't be any quicker than your 986S.

The Z4 Coupe has comparable boot space to the Boxster, but you can put bigger things in as it's not split in two!

Excellent choice, Sir! (Same as mine, in fact!)

I've had mine since the start of October and am loving it. It's getting a good run this weekend from London to Stoke then to Aberystwyth and back...can't wait. I went for SE-spec, not Sport, but got the sports seats and 18 inch wheels. It's still a very firm ride, but on test-drive I thought the Sport was just a bit too harsh for my needs.

And best of all (well, almost) is that they are still pretty rare. I've only seen three others in 4 months.

Great car. Let me know if I can answer any specific questions

Cheers

Wrighty

ETA: Garlick - I see you're in SW London. So am I - let me know if you want to see mine "in the flesh".

Black/red - perfect!!!

Ours is a daily driver, 60 mile commute London and back.

"but also use it for European drives, Le Mans and track days etc- do you reckon it would be good for that?"

Are you me???? This is precisely what we purchased it for in addition to the commute. Delivered September 1st, was in France September 2nd - cruised down to south of France for 10days and it was great on the autoroute with comfortable cruise controlled 100mph and decent economy. Great fun on the route napolean and some of the terrific roads north of Nice. I've done a couple of trackdays in it and have another booked for the 10th, its been brilliant fun on track so far.
Its no quicker than a Boxster, but has a more grunty power delivery - plenty enough torque to unstick the rears and play sideways if you so desire. Its imbued with more 'character' than a boxster/cayman but is a less rounded product, I'd characterize it more as a playful mini-GT than an out and out sportster, which for me makes it a more versatile proposition. I do enjoy the rarity of it too - I'm yet to see another on the road whilst at the helm of ours.
To sum up, from what you've written it sounds as though a Z coupe would be perfect for you, but as always with these things its down to you to get behind the wheel and decide whether or not it floats your boat.

Thanks all thumbup

I've had my test drive and I do like it. Keep getting calls from the dealer asking if i'm 'ready' to make a decision!

OK, so, black/red meets with approval! I think i'll add the hi fi upgrade, xenons, sat nav and multi function wheel- anything else??

Oh, and does you know anyone who fancies buying a gorgeous (IMHO) Boxster!

Sounds like you've got your spec sorted, just need to choose between sport & si and of course which wheels you want....thumbup

Oh, it will be the Si, and as for wheels......bit undecided. I'll have to do that at the dealer me thinks.

Edit: or maybe the sport......!

If I had a pound for every time I'd hankered after a 3.0 Z4 in black with red leather... well... um... I would have enough money to buy one! Make sure you have a really good drive - Most group tests where the testers swap cars so everyone gets to drive every car come to the conclusion that if you love one you'll hate the other. I'm not saying that's the case for everyone - I love both cars - just that it seems to be a commonly expressed sentiment.

I have had my coupe for about 3 weeks now and am really enjoying it.

It is a 3.0 Sport in silver with black leather (one thing I would say, if you are going for the SE model make sure you spec the Sports seats because they are much nicer than the standard chairs). I test drove both the SE and Sport models and found them quite similar in terms of handling, the Sport being a tad stiffer but not unpleasantly so, hence I went for the Sport because I felt it suited my driving style better and prefered the looks with the larger wheels.

Good bits so far:

The engine, really nice and torquey, with a nice progressive power delivery (bearing in mind I haven't had it over about 5000 due to running in). Plus it sounds lovely.

I really like the look of the car, everyone has their own opinion on the "flame surfacing", and even I reserved judgement on the roadster but I dont know if is the addition of the roof thats altered the proportions or something but it just looks so right in the metal. Really classic, almost like some kind of 50's GT or sports racer.

The performance seems more than adequate, and is definately quicker in a straight line than my old car which is always a bonus.

Economy is suprisingly good I think for this kind of car and engine size, I've done about 700 miles so far mainly on a 30 mile a day commute on mixed roads with a couple of longer jaunts at the weekends and the computer tells me its averaging 27 mpg.

Rarity, I have only seen 3 others on the road (in contrast to lots of Boxsters may I add!)

Things to potentially dislike:

The ride is a bit stiff with the Sports suspension on the substandard tarmac we have up north, some people may not get along with this, I don't mind it personally.

The alloys are fiddley to clean!

There seems to be a negative attitude towards BMW's from other drivers? (Don't they know I own the road :-) )

Early days I know, but those are my thoughts so far, great car.

I know I am a fan of Alpine white, but I saw for the first time this morning a 3.0 Si in Alpine White.

OMG it was stunning.

I have to agree.

I have always believed that the Z4 roadster was a good looking car and a very good looking car compared to the Z3. With the addition of the roof the car has gained more presence.

Side on I think the Z4 coupe is one the best looking cars in its class. Its like a cheap alternative to the Ferrari 599 in the looks department!

Sorry to hijack the thread... I'm also in the market for a Z4 coupe (replacing a smart raodster!) the dealer seems a little unsure of how the passenger airbag deactivation works (switch in the glovebaox or special car seat). Got any ideas?
If you're after a deal check out the usual internet broker style websites - I think there's 10%+ to be had off.

Congratulations on the car garlick. I have ordered a 3.0Si today. I was offered a factory build car and was quite shocked when they were talking May delivery.
