Has anyone taken the grill with the t piece out of the M sport bumper, and replaced it with one form an M5. They look same bar T Piece.

I got a grill for mine from a M5, but it was missing the holes and mounts for the brake cooling ducts.

Dont want to get the bumper off again if you cant get a grill mesh without T piece.

Cheers in advance

ill answer my own q. The m5 has a differnet grill mesh, so if fitted to the sport bumper stops you having the standard air ducts the sport has. You need to mod the m5 grill mesh to get it to take ducts on the e39.

I hope you're not trying to create a fake M5

BMW did that from the factory, aside from the exhuast, alloys, T-bar and mirrors exterior wise an m5 and an E39 Sport are identical.

Whats wrong with a fake M5?

Some people can't afford or don't want to spend the money on the real thing. If not I don't begrudge then wanting to emulate it. Out of interest why do you?

Where do you start with this one!! Everything is wrong with it.

Sticking badges and changing grills wont make it the real thing, they will simply make it look to others that you have the real thing.

You'd need to worry a lot about impressing others to bother. Particularly whn you can buy an M3 or M5 for £4-5k

Ever thought some people like bodykits etc becuase they like the way it looks rather than what other people think of them?

As long as it doesn't say M5 on the back I see no problem with Sports, or M5 mirrors, or even if its your bag and you can be bothered with the hassle of fitting them, 4 exhuasts.

the original question seemed to be how do you fit an M5 grill to a sport

people fit bodykits because they like the look...

I think your being too hard on fakers. Take the M5. The subtle mods to the standard 5 series shape make the car stand out as a bit special. but not everyone wants to drive around town in a car which has a MPG in the high teens low twenties regardless of whether it costs 4-5K. Frankly the car can also be a bit of a liability with regards its flat tyres, 400bhp and hard suspension in the weather conditions we have at the mo, and not everyone has the luxury of a second car to pop into in inclement weather.

I dont have a problem with somebody dressing up a 5 series to make it a bit different.

But dressing up a 5 series to make it look exactly like an M5 is sad IMHO

I'm with Benno on this one. The 5 series range is great anyway, and people should be proud to drive one. Yes, the added sport kit makes it look more aggressive, and in my opinion better, so fitting this is all good. However, creating a direct body copy of an M5 is a bit pointless, the main reason people buy one is 'that' engine. Enjoy the 5's - it's still a lot better car than most on the road, and the drive is at least from the correct wheels.

PS. Actually knocked on the window of a guy parked on the roadside in Bristol in his silver 'M5' and asked if was aware he'd been robbed - someone thief had removed half of his exhaust pipes!

The original question related to removing the T-Bar in a Sport front bumper. This is a rather ackwardly placed bar in the lower front grille of the bumper, which looks a bit daft. If you remove it, unless you replace it with a different grille, you see the outlines of the T-bar. The only other available grille is that of the M5.

I see no issue with emulating the M5 look provided you don't pass it off as an M5 by sticking a badge that says M5 on the back. I've considered M5 mirrors for my 530i Sport - why? Becuase I love the M5, I love the look and would love to own one, but cannot afford one. It's the next best thing. I don't give a damn what others think - 99% of people wont even notice the new mirrors - but its how the car looks to you, as the owner.

How is it the next best thing with changed wing mirrors? surely its still just a 530i sport nd it doesnt suddenly handle and perform like a m5 by simply changing the mirrors

I once had an E 34 530i V8 and stuck a 540 badge on the back. At the time it made me feel good. It looked right. The sport equipped car never gave the game away. Fortunately I never got in a race with a 540i! No one apart from me ever knew that it wasn't a 540. Except, maybe the guy I bought it off. Having a fake is nothing to be ashamed of, IMHO.
After all there are a lot of very tasty motors out there that are replicas of past Icons.angel

Sorry, I wasn't very clear with what I meant. For many, a Sport model is the 'next best thing', and the closer it looks, the more personal enjoyment it gives them. Sure, it wont perform or handle like an M5, but when an M5 is out of reach thats immaterial.

I'd buy an M5 tommorrow if I could afford to run it. I can't, so I have a 530i Sport. So what if decide in the future it'd look better to me with the M5 mirrors? It's not harming anyone else, and it's not passing it off as something it isn't provided it doesn't say M5 on the back.

Which model are we talking here? The thread is about the E39, you certainly cannot get an E39 M5 for 4-5K. Also, the suspension is remarkably compliant, and as for the power...you have traction control, or else, you know, don't press the loud pedal so hard...

One of the best all-round cars you can buy, regardless of roads or conditions. I drove the new E60 to consider trading up but aside from that amazing engine, the overall dynamics left me cold vs the E39.
