can the rather unattractive e34 4 spoke airbag wheel be upgraded to the 3 spoke wheel (with the airbag light on the lower spoke) is the slipring the same for a direct swap?

They are not directly interchangeable. The three spoke with the light in one of the spokes has the airbag crash sensor contained in the steering wheel. The four spoke has a more conventional set up with the crash sensor on the vehicle.
