I'm still on the case with plans to change our cars to suit expanding family. Latest plan is to keep the 911 and change the 320TD for a X5. Now the Mrs reckons we need the 3.0 or 3.0D X5 since the 4.4/4.6/4.8 V8 will be sub 10 mpg.
I not that bothered about running costs and really fancy one of the V8 engined cars however would probably think twice if these really are 10 mpg or less cars - real world.
Anyone run the 3.0, 3.0D or a V8 car willing to share the 'real' MPG with me?
Also anyone driven the 3.0 - is it painfully slow?

The 3.0D is far from painfully slow. If you want to see painfully slow you should try the Cayenne 3.2 we have on loan at the moment whilst our X5 is in the bodyshop.
Our car pre accident was returning 27 MPG day in day out.
MOH wasn't that fussed about the X5 when we bought it. Now he can't wait for it to come back.

I also bought an X5 as the 911 was too small for the kiddies, and I've been through the "which engine to choose ??" dilema.
First I had a loan of a colleagues 3.0d for a week and have to say that it was good, but not as fast as I'hoped - around 10 sec to 60. Good torque and lazy driving, but I wasn't at all impressed with the mpg 24 to 26 on average, which I thought was pretty poor for an oil burner.
I ditched the idea of getting a V8 due to mpg, gas guzzler stigma and general higher running costs, but the one I test drove was bloody quick.
Given the fact that diesel is on average 8p a litre more expensive than unleaded and that a petrol 3.0i X5 is at least 3 to 4k cheaper than the diesels, I opted for a 3.0i petrol - also 8.5 sec to 60, so no slouch, although you do have to rev it a bit.
I haven't regretted it and contrary to popular beleif the mpg on the 3.0i is pretty respectable. On my 15 mile commute to work through town and on the motorway, with the cruise on, I regularly get 24.5mpg and even saw 25.5mpg last week. On average though unless I'm thrashing it, I average 23mpg.
That's my experience, but it's up to you to make your own mind up.
cheers,

I average about 18mpg in a 4.6iS. A tank full has never been worse than 17mpg, and has been as high as 22mpg.
Exactly the same figures as my '05 4.8.
Had a bloody good play today with a new Aston Martin softtop thingy. Now for sure given a chance he could muller me, but the 4.8 is fast enough to make you smile and not allow him past on country roads

I went throught exactly the same thought process when buying, diesel - nice and sensible but too much dough for the fuel saving, 4.4 - reaonable price good specs but way too thirsty so 3.0 litre it is. Only problem with my logic was the 4.4 can return just as good a fuel mileage as the 3.0.
Ended up with a 4.4 and I get anywhere from 17mpg to 22mpg which is a pleasant surprise, goes quite well too.

doesn't the V8 X5 hold the record for the fastest lap 4x4 SUV at the nurberg ring?
Don't know about the V8 but the V10 is non too shabby.

Eh?
Biggest price difference I've seen anywhere is 3p.

If you do go the petrol route from my experience you'll get about the same from the 4.4 as the 3.0i but the 4.4 will make you smile while the 3.0i will not.
forget the 3.0 and go for the 4.4, which is what i did, theres not much difference in mpg but the 4.4 sounds soooo much better
