Anyone ever heard of this?

Have had a car inspected that I am looking to buy (E36 M3) and the report has come back that there is play in the steering column - as I understand it this is potentially a MOT failure point.

Any knowledge / advice on this? Thanks

Yes, there was a recall about 3 years ago to replace a lower link on the steeing column, because of a problem with excessive corrosion.

No recalls on the actual steering column, only as the last post says the lower steering spindle for corrosion....which is still on going....

where is the play exactly? if it is in the coupling give your local BMW agent a ring with the car details - they'll soon tell you whether it's outstanding

and yes the one I saw a couple of weeks ago would have failed the test - it was causing the car to wander at speed as well
